How to Draw Continuous Footings in Revit
Interface in Autodesk Revit
Whilst working inside Autodesk® Revit , the modules used for concrete design (Footing, Column, Beam, Wall, and Slab) are grouped on a single ribbon, named PowerPack Design .
The PowerPack Design ribbon
The following panels are available in the PowerPack Design ribbon:
1. The Manage Project panel includes the following commands:
-
Localisation opens the Localisation settings dialog, where user can define the country, language, and standards.
-
Family Mapping configures the default parameters for mapping Revit Family data to the Advance Design modules data structure.
-
Design Templates opens a dialog where users can define templates for structural design calculation.
Pressing the arrow next to Manage Project a list with several tools will open:
-
Using the Import command, already calculated structural elements, available as files in *.gtcx format, can be imported in the current project. Press the Import button . The command bar from Revit will display the message: " Select a structural element ". Selecting the desired element calls the Open dialog-box, from where a .gtcx file can be selected to be imported.
-
The Export command is used for exporting a structural element from Revit in .gtcx format.
-
The Synchronize command reads or writes model data in *.gtcx format for all elements selected.
2. Commands in the Assumptions panel are used for accessing and managing the element geometry and the associated design and reinforcement assumptions. The panel includes the following commands:
-
Create Group creates a group of structural elements (design group of foundations, design group of columns, multi-span beams, group of walls, group of slabs) that will be calculated simultaneously.
-
Geometry command is used for managing the geometry of a selected structural element. If the dimensions of an element are changed, a new Revit family defined by these new dimensions is automatically created. Depending on what type of structural element is selected different dialog-boxes are available, according to the element's geometry.
Notes:
- When selecting a structural element in Revit and changing its dimensions by selecting another Revit family, the geometry parameters modify in the Geometry dialog PowerPack Design.
- If multiple structural elements with different dimensions are selected, the variation is marked accordingly in the Geometry dialog.
-
Soil Profile command is used for managing soil layer properties and the minimum or maximum groundwater level.
-
Soil Database command opens the soil library. The soil library loads the data from an .xml file containing the default soil types. User can always add a new layer to this library.
-
Design opens the corresponding Design Assumptions dialog for the selected concrete element (Footing, Column, Beam, Wall, Slab).
-
Reinforcement opens the Reinforcement Assumptions dialog. The dialog content depends on the selected element type (Footing, Column, Beam, Wall, Slab).
-
The Loads and Combinations command allows the user to define loads, load cases and combinations for the selected element.
-
Import Analysis Results allows the user to import a results package from the Revit project.
3. Commands in the Calculations panel are used for automatic 3D rebar generation. The user can choose to calculate a single element, multiple elements, or the entire model.
-
Calculate command performs an automatic design of the selected concrete elements.
-
Foundation Sizing launches a preliminary sizing of the footing considering the applied loads. This command is available only for isolated or continuous footings.
-
Constructive Dispositions command generates a preliminary sizing for reinforcement cage based on minimum constructive dispositions imposed by the codes. During this process, the loads are not considered.
-
Verify command performs a model verification. The process is similar to the one performed during Calculate but the software does not design anymore the theoretical reinforcement areas but uses the real reinforcement in place and performs all required verifications.
Commands in the Calculations panel allow user to work using several workflows as described below:
-
Launch a preliminary sizing of the footing with Foundations Sizing tool and then Verify the generated cage.
-
Directly Calculate the element and obtain a customized reinforcement cage.
-
Generate the element reinforcement cage based on constructive dispositions (launching Constructive Dispositions command), launch a verification for the initial model (using Verify command), adjust manually the reinforcement cage and perform again a model verification until there are no errors or warnings.
4. With the commands in the Results panel, the user can explore and adjust the calculated reinforcement of an element, verify stresses and effort solicitations using diagrams, create automatic drawings, create reports or rebar lists.
-
Design Status opens a dialog where the status of the calculated elements can be checked. This window also allows the user to return to the default assumptions and to clear the calculated reinforcement. Press Close to apply the changes.
-
Depending on the selected structural element, the Main Bars icon opens a dialog where the user can modify element reinforcement parameters.
-
Using Diagrams the user can visually verify stresses in concrete elements more easily than simply comparing a range of values.
-
Generate Drawings creates the needed sections views, places annotations and dimensions, produces bar schedules and bill of quantities. This BIM technology is also able to easily manage the drawing updates when a design change is introduced. They do not need to be recreated or updated manually. The structural drawings are automatically created as Revit sections in the Project Browser . The rebar schedule is also created in the Project Browser , in the Schedules/Quantities section.
-
Customize Drawings allows the user to configure settings for automatic drawing generation.
-
Generate Report generates the calculation report in *.PDF or *.DOC format.
